Më shumë se shtatë vjet në zhvillim, BESA: Premtimi është historia e patreguar e burrave dhe grave të Shqipërisë - pothuajse të gjithë myslimanë - të cilët u përballën me nazistët, të armatosur vetëm me kodin tradicional të nderit, besën e tyre, duke shpëtuar jetën e gati dy mijë hebrenjve.
Ky rrëfim heroizmi pothuajse u humb përgjithmonë në dekadat komuniste që pasuan Luftën e Dytë Botërore.
Është një histori që erdhi në dritë përmes prizmit kontemporan të dy burrave të bashkuar në një kërkim sa të hijshëm aq edhe të papritur.
Njëri është Norman H. Gershman, një fotograf hebre-amerikan i njohur, i cili është i vendosur të regjistrojë trimërinë dhe dhembshurinë e shqiptarëve. Tjetri është Rexhep Hoxha, një tregtar nga Tirana, i cili i kërkon ndihmë Normanit për të gjetur një familje hebreje të strehuar nga prindërit e tij muslimanë gjatë luftës. Kjo familje, i tregon ai Normanit, i besoi babait të tij tre libra hebraikë, libra që - sipas kodit të lashtë shqiptar të besës - tani duhet tju kthehen.
Udhëtimi që shpaloset është i jashtëzakonshëm. Me historinë plotësisht të hulumtuar dhe stilin tepër emocional të rrëfimit të tij, Besa: Premtimi sfidon disa nga supozimet më fondamentale rreth armiqësisë së menduar midis Islamit dhe Judaizmit dhe në mënyrë mjaft elokuente na kujton fuqinë e njerëzve të mirë për të transformuar mënyrën se si e shohim botën tonë.
Filmuar në Shqipëri, Bullgari, Izrael, Angli dhe Amerikë, dokumentari paraqet intervista të detajuara me të mbijetuarit dhe shpëtimtarët e tyre, pamje arkivore të pashfaqura më parë, një seri e mprehtë animacionesh, dhe një muzikë origjinale, mjaft të fuqishme dhe prekëse, nga një prej kompozitorëve më të shquar amerikan, Z. Philip Glass.

More than seven years in the making, BESA: The Promise is the untold story of the men and women of Albania – almost all of them Muslims – who faced down the Nazis armed only with their traditional honor code of besa and saved the lives of nearly two thousand Jews.
This tale of heroism was nearly lost forever in the communist decades that followed World War II.
It’s a story that’s brought to light through the contemporary prism of two men joined together in a remarkable and unexpected quest.
One is Norman H. Gershman, a renowned Jewish-American photographer who is determined to record the bravery and compassion of the Albanians. The other is Rexhep Hoxha, a shopkeeper from Tirana, Albania, who asks Norman to help him locate a Jewish family his Muslim parents sheltered during the war. This family, he tells Norman, entrusted his father with three Hebrew books, books that – under the ancient Albanian code of besa – must now be returned.
The journey that unfolds is extraordinary. With its thoroughly researched history and its profoundly emotional storytelling style, BESA: The Promise challenges some of the most fundamental assumptions about the presumed enmity between Islam and judaism and eloquently reminds us of the power of good people to transform the way we view our world.
Shot in Albania, Bulgaria, Israel, the United Kingdom and the United States, the documentary features in-depth interviews with survivors and rescuers, never-before- seen archival footage, an exquisite series of animations, and a powerful and moving original score by one of America’s foremost living composers, Mr. Philip Glass.
